A surprisingly warts 'n' all documentary of BeatlePaul McCartney's first decade outside of the rarefied world of the Fabs, Wingspan is the most compulsive evidence yet in McCartney's bid to have Wings acclaimed not simply as the chronological successor to the Beatles, but also as their logical successor, too. It is hard, after all, to argue with either the success or, at its best, the music that the group made; Wingspan, however, also renders it impossible to squabble with the motives that drew the group together in the first place. Depicting the end of the Beatles as the inevitable rupture that history still hates to admit it was, McCartney then sketches a period of absolute confusion, during which he continued making music because it was all that he knew how to do -- with wife Linda roped in primarily because she was there. McCartney's first three albums, an eponymous debut, Ram, and the newly formed Wings' Wild Life, certainly back up his claims to have been simply singing for the sake of it. They are excellent albums, containing some of his finest ever songs ('Dear Friend' eclipses any Beatles ballad for intensity and sincerity), but they were made not for commercial gain or post-Beatles glory. They were made because he wanted to make them. Even Red Rose Speedway, the first Wings album to acknowledge life outside of the band's big-barn base, has a charming naïveté and eccentric amateurism to it, and it is more than halfway into the documentary (and four years into his 'solo' career) before McCartney finally acknowledges it's time to make 'the best album you've ever heard.' That was Band on the Run, an LP that did indeed come close to living up to its creator's intentions and, from thereon in, the Wings story rockets by in a blur of world tours and mega-hits, before finally being shattered against the walls of a Japanese prison cell.

Documented by a charmingly erudite McCartney and interspersed with some excellent performance clips and videos, the DVD presents 88 minutes of the main attraction, plus another 22 of interview outtakes. Complete performances of 'Jet,' 'Let 'Em In' (both live) and 'Rockestra' then supplement the wealth of live, TV, and video clips that illustrate the story. But is Wingspan your typical rockumentary? Far from it. Wingspan serves two purposes -- the aforementioned one and a second that comes as no surprise to the band's truest fans but flies in the face of conventional wisdom regardless: the fact that Wings was as much Linda McCartney's project as her husband's. Throughout the band's career, her presence on-stage either mortified or amused observers -- indeed, when Paul submitted the joint songwriting credits to Ram, his (but not her) publishers of the time threatened legal action, convinced that the McCartneys were pulling a fast one, trying to deprive them of a pound of their rightful flesh. In fact, Linda was even more instrumental in Wings' creative process than they (or anyone) could ever have guessed, with Paul admitting that, without her, he might still be a recluse on the Mull of Kintyre, making music because that's all he knows how to do, but not knowing what to do with it once it's made. Of course Wingspan will never truly rehabilitate Wings' reputation or membership, any more than the ugly scenes scarring the latter half of Anthology (and spilling over here) will ever convince the world that the Beatles were anything other than lovable moptops. But, if your taste for McCartney's muse goes beyond the songs that everyone is so sick of hearing, it's a treat that bears rewatching again and again. Now all that's needed is an unabridged video collection.
